But Doctor, I can't exercise

We've all been through illness, injury etcetera where formal routine exercise becomes significantly impaired or impossible. Much bigger problems arise when we fail to get back on track as quickly as possible. It is not at all uncommon to find patients report abandoning their previously healthy habits sometimes for months at a time ending up with weight gain, changes in blood lipid levels, elevated blood sugars and more. In essence, our self care spirals out of control. But there's an easy solution to this which too often gets overlooked. There are simple things that almost anybody can do on a daily basis to increase their physical activity level even when recovering from illness. This is why in the hospital, early PT intervention as well as follow up outside the hospital including things like home PT, rehab et cetera can be extraordinarily beneficial.

About our daily activity level. Don't forget that everything adds up at the end of the day! If all we can do is to move about for several minutes at a time, most of us can start with gentle stretching, ranges of motion, walking often with assistance if needed, then some resistance exercise with bands, weights etc. And early in recovery this may be done periodically throughout the day. The other thing we certainly can do is to carefully track our carbohydrate and calorie intake and make sure we're eating as healthy as possible. As long as we have professional guidance, that's what we all need to do. One of the concerns I have with patients on exercise membership outside the home, is that we too often fail to implement good health care on a daily basis when unable to access the gym or club. Do not let this be you. Always remember, is far easier to stay healthy and regain ground on a simple step by step basis than it is to go through another crisis which can require months or sometimes years of recovery. ~ We Are Here for You
